Fancy dress or fashion?

19.01.2007
Arriving at a 60/70’s themed New Year’s
Eve party brought to my attention the very fine line between fancy dress
and catwalk fashion.

The majority of my fellow party goers were actually trying to
be outrageous but much to my amazement, were well and truly on trend
for spring/summer 2007. (well, apart from the huge afro wigs!)

There were 70’s full length satin dresses in bright floral
prints, short hemmed 60’s dresses with baker boy hats and bold
psychedelic patterned shirts in neon yellows, pinks and green. There
were even a few baby doll outfits with leggings, platforms and massive
fake eyelashes - all of which looked absolutely stunning and bang on
trend.

The recent catwalk shows were smothered with flamboyant colour
and volume dresses are still key although trousers have once again reared
their head reinvented with a mannish, grunge like style. The grunge
and acid house era of the early 90’s with soft layering of garments
sits comfortably alongside the colourful and ‘in your face’
patterns of the 60’s/70’s.

Dresses can be
both full length or above the knee with an array of exciting Chelsea
platforms and chunky shoes that will be a hot trend come spring. (In
fact, anything with a 60’s vibe is set to be huge once ‘Factory
Girl’ has previewed next month).

A luxurious classical feel still hangs in the air with the ever
iconic celebrity Dita Von Teese leading the way. The look is femminity
with a twist - beautiful powerful tailored pieces inspired by the 40
& 50’s representing all that is man made. Inspiration is taken
from architecture and many historical associations such as medieval,
Victorian and the art deco movements.

The structure and celebration of power represented in the female
suit works well with the continuing 80’s power dressing trend
that keeps re-inventing itself, this time around with a far looser,
softer feel.

Colours are soft in contrast to the garish 60’s and acid
house - with separates, shirts and a fine layered look that gives a
real choice for those who aren’t able to brave the many illuminous
and voluminous outfits that dominate the coming season.

There is still a harder edge to fashion as the gothic theme
remains ever popular - aggressive black corsets, short black a-line
skirts, contrasting colours of red and fuchsia pink and with a strong
sequin theme. Combined with rainbow colours a metallic edge and a futuristic
twist, this was very much the scene for Dolce & Gabanna and the
Gucci shows most recently. Something maybe to watch out for this season
or maybe just inspiration for my next fancy dress outing?
